About Me

Welcome. Thank you for taking time to explore my webpage. My name is Heather MacPherson and I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Victoria. I have a private practice located in Langley City, BC. My passion lies in assisting individuals to live their lives to their fullest potential. I believe that cultivating a safe space for individuals to explore their lives, and creating a strong therapeutic relationship are the first and foremost important factors in the counselling process. I have several years of experience working with people in a variety of capacities: in outpatient, inpatient, residential, and day treatment mental health facilities, in schools, and in the community. I have supported children, youth, adults, and seniors who struggle with symptoms a variety of life trials such as depression, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, borderline personality traits, developmental disabilities, and PTSD. I am committed to my own life-long education and continually seek educational opportunities, trainings, workshops, and conferences to further enhance my practice. I look forward to meeting you.
Please note that I have a little white fluffy dog (Bichon Frise) who is training to be a therapy dog who often comes to my office and sits in her bed during sessions.

My Approach to Counselling

As a highly relational person, my attuned attention and compassionate nature support a large part of my practice. I firmly believe that healing takes place, partly, in relationships. Therefore, it is within the therapeutic relationship that I tailor specific theoretical approaches to meet each individual’s unique strengths, desires, processes, and needs.

I have enhanced my practice with supplementary training and/or study in therapeutic approaches such as:
• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

• Exposure-Response Prevention Therapy

• Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

• Narrative Therapy

• Emotion-Focused Family Therapy for Eating Disorders

• Parent-Child Interaction Therapy

• Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

• EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

• Attachment/Development Theory

• Motivational Interviewing

• Somatic/body-based therapies

• Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Neuroscience shows us that trauma is often stored in the body (Levine, 1997). I use body-based therapies to treat symptoms of trauma, depression, OCD, eating disorders, and other difficulties. When indicated, and when clients are comfortable, I assist clients to incorporate (often subtle) movement into sessions which not only helps to regulate the nervous system, but also helps to release trauma.
